What Is AMG®?

“A” as in Aufrecht, “M” as in Melcher, and “G” as in Grossaspach. Daimler-Benz Engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher were working on the Mercedes-Benz 300 SE racing engine in the company’s Development Department in the 1960s until all motorsport initiatives were scrapped. The pair relocated operations to Aufrecht’s home in Grossaspach, Germany, and they spent their free time fine-tuning the performance of the 300 SE racing engine. In 1965, Manfred Schiek, a colleague at Daimler, started and performed well in the German Touring Car Championship with the 300 SE engine, winning 10 races. Schiek’s victories formed the foundation for what would become a lifelong pursuit of engineering excellence. The first major racing milestone arrived in 1971 during the 24 Hours of Spa. The AMG®-tuned Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.8 was the class champion among luxury sedans and second overall. The AMG® moniker began spreading throughout the globe shortly thereafter, and in 1990 a major milestone was achieved in AMG® history with the merger. Customer demand soared once AMG® products were sold through Mercedes-Benz.
